Winter Flowers explores the transition between winter and spring, when color begins to return and the natural world slowly reawakens. This exhibition brings together a selection of works that foreground florals and organic forms emerging from stillness, celebrating resilience, renewal, and transformation.

Winter Flowers inhabits the in-between: frost-softened palettes, early blossoms, and layered textures that evoke both dormancy and growth. The works invite viewers to pause with this moment of transition and to notice the delicate signals of change that often go unseen.

Swartz has long drawn inspiration from the transition of each season.

“Late winter has always fascinated me. Everything still looks quiet and dormant, but if you look closely, the first hints of life are already there. Winter Flowers is really about that moment of transition—the subtle return of color, the resilience of nature, and the quiet promise that spring is on its way.”

The front of the gallery introduces Winter Flowers through a gradual shift from winter stillness to the return of color. Landscape of Resonances 010 rises in a vertical field of fiery orange and red, with striations that allude to aspen trees.

Adjacent, an asymmetrical grid of nineteen 12x12" canvases moves between quiet, snow-like whites, into brighter blues, reds, yellows, and pinks. Several floral works are interspersed throughout, adding concentrated bursts of color across the grid.

  • A small grid of four works from Nature Revisited follows. These 12x12" canvases are meant to be viewed up close with their delicate botanical impressions and whispers of color. The sequence concludes with Fresh Bouquet 1 and Fresh Bouquet 2. Set against white underpaintings, bold fields of red and turquoise burst forward, accented with splashes of red, yellow, and purple, like vivid, freshly gathered bouquets in full bloom.
